Logistex User Group 2018

Users of Logistex’s warehouse management and control software recently gathered at the Kettering Park Hotel for our fifth User Group. Delegates heard about the latest product development, attended workshops on how to make the most of the software, and engaged in lively discussions with their industry peers about how to address business challenges facing them today.

A highlight of the day was guest speaker Brian McBride, Chairman of ASOS and former MD of Amazon UK, who gave our closing speech. Brian spoke about digital disruption, citing the likes of Nokia and Kodak who went from being hugely successful to falling by the wayside as they did not respond to digital advances. He also spoke about the importance of mobile and social media, giving examples from ASOS and Amazon, and ultimately arguing that retailers only have two choices – ‘Evolve or Die.’

SHD Logistics Conference

The SHD Logistics Conference, ‘Transforming Logistics Through Technology’, returned this month allowing attendees to discover transformative new technology, network with senior logistics professionals, and debate and discuss the challenges faced in today’s environment.

Among the speakers were Justin Saw, Sales Director at Logistex, and Naila Dad, Head of Operations at Pharmacy2U who discussed the award winning pharmaceutical dispensing facility created by Logistex and Pharmacy2U. The pair also sat on the afternoon conference panel to take questions from the audience.

Logistex Celebrates 80 Years

The story behind Logistex’s growth and success

Logistex can trace its roots back to 1937 when it started as Cleco, a name synonymous with advanced and sophisticated automated systems throughout the latter part of the 20th century. The name Cleco will be familiar to many, for years it was one of the strongest and most respected companies in the industry, designing and manufacturing materials handling products, including VNA automated stacker cranes, with which the company was most associated. Even then, the company supplied integrated solutions based on bought in products from other materials handling manufacturers as well as in-house equipment, so the business model we use today is one that has always been a part of the company’s culture.

As the world of IT and software systems became more advanced,  Cleco merged with software house Io Systems, with whom the company had a long-term partnership, in the 1990s to provide the additional expertise needed to support its own increasingly sophisticated systems. This commitment to specialist in-house IT expertise remains part of the company’s DNA to this day.

Following a management buyout from former owners Melrose PLC, Logistex is now a fully independent business, managed by the team which turned the business round into a financially robust, profitable and successful organisation. The company head office is located in Kettering, Northamptonshire, and employs over 250 people throughout the country.

After dusting off an old Cleco finance ledger, we can see there have been many highs, and some lows, along the journey. 1944 saw costs for damage as a result of the war, whilst 1969 saw an allowance for depreciation of the company aeroplane! The company cars looked a lot different back then too; in the swinging 60s Logistex employees were driving around in the likes of a Ford Zodiac, Humber Hawk, Hillman Minx and an electric van.

Today, Logistex continue to design and deliver intelligent, productive and cost effective warehouse solutions, helping hundreds of clients in a variety of sectors to raise productivity, improve service and cut costs. We’ve made lots of friends along the way too. Mike Hellier, Logistics Product Development Manager at our most longstanding partner, Pladis, says; “Our many years in successful partnership with Logistex are testament to their good attitude, high performance and excellent quality. Some of our most recent successes include the automation of the Superdrug NDC which saw a 48% increase in throughput in the first year using 60% less operational cost, and a revolutionary warehousing and dispensing hub for Pharmacy2U which has improved their clinical accuracy to an industry leading 99.98%.

Pharmacy2U and Logistex Win Top Prize at The Logistics Awards!

We’re thrilled that Pharmacy2U and Logistex won not one, but two awards last night at the prestigious Logistics Awards. Pharmacy2U and Logistex scooped up trophies for best ‘New Facility’ and ‘Overall Winner’ for the night. A huge congratulations to the whole team who made this groundbreaking new facility possible. Logistex welcomes back Darren Alden as General Manager – Engineering Support Services

Darren Alden has re-joined Logistex as General Manager – Engineering Support Services to support the growth of our business. Previously at Logistex Darren was responsible for our residential sites before leaving to join Marks and Spencer to head up their engineering maintenance operation at one of their major sites. Darren was keen to return to Logistex and will bring back with him many new skills and insights gained whilst he was away.

The ESS Innovations Award

At Logistex our site teams are always coming up with innovations that will improve the customer’s operation in some way. This could be by improving productivity, increasing efficiency, saving time, saving money – lots of different ways that make life easier for the customer.

Each year, The ESS Innovations Award recognises the very best of these innovations. The judging process for the 2016 ESS Innovations Award has taken place and the winner has been selected.  The main award went to the Logistex site team at Arco, with the team at B&Q being selected as the runner up. The teams received their awards at a formal presentation which took place on Thursday 1st June 2017.

Logistex and Clipper Announced as Finalists at UKWA Awards 2017

Finalist UKWA Awards

Logistex has been announced as a finalist in the Technical Innovation category at the 2017 UKWA Awards for its project with Clipper Logistics.

The UKWA Awards recognise extraordinary achievement of individuals and companies in the logistics industry and are judged by a distinguished panel of industry leaders. The ceremony, which is attended by over 400 guests, will take place on 5th July at The Dorchester Hotel, London, with special VIP guest Gerald Ratner.

We are proud that Logistex is once again included in the Northamptonshire Ltd Top 100 companies for 2017. The survey, conducted by one of the UK’s leading accountancy firms, Grant Thornton, uses the latest accounts available for the county’s largest independent firms to provide a recognised barometer of the county’s overall business performance.
